Human Genome Sciences, Inc. Approved as the First BioPharmaceutical Manufacturing Apprenticeship Provider in Maryland

BALTIMORE, MD (January 12, 2017) – Today, Kelly M. Schulz, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor announced that Human Genome Sciences, Inc. of Rockville, MD has been approved as an employer designated to provide apprenticeship opportunities for the occupation of Instrumentation and Electrical Technician by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council. Human Genome Sciences, Inc. is the first biopharmaceutical manufacturing apprenticeship employer in the State. Under the leadership of Governor Larry Hogan, the State is working to expand the apprenticeship program to include STEM occupations to the growing list of nontraditional apprenticeship programs.

“The Maryland Department of Labor is pleased to have Human Genome Sciences, Inc. as an apprenticeship employer to further advance workforce solutions for the emerging biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry,” said Maryland Department of Labor Secretary Kelly M. Schulz. “This program will allow Marylanders the opportunity to the gain global, in-demand skills needed to advance in the new economy."

Registered apprenticeships are voluntary, industry-driven programs sponsored by employers, employer associations, and jointly by management and labor. Apprenticeships combine supervised, structured, on-the-job training and related technical instruction to teach apprentices the skills necessary to succeed in a specific occupation. The Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council formulates apprenticeship policies, registers standards and agreements, determines which skilled trades are apprenticeable, and formulates and adopts standards of apprenticeship that safeguard the welfare of all apprentices.

The Human Genome Sciences, Inc. Instrumentation and Electrical Technician program will provide participants with skills in advance manufacturing. To participate in the apprenticeship program, interested parties must contact the employer directly to apply.
